Stretching from the Côte Chalonnaise to the south of Mâcon city, the Mâconnais vineyards extend for 40km, forming a set of hillsides bordered by the Saône and Grosne rivers. In the heart of the Mâcon appellation, on clay-limestone soils, the Jambon family has been making wine in Pierreclos since 1750. Their 12ha estate looks down over the valley and towards the emblematic Roche de Solutré. Pierre Antoine Jambon ran the domaine until he was joined a couple of years ago by his childhood friend Michel Prudhon. Committed to growing healthy vines, they practice environmentally friendly viticulture, keeping yields deliberately low for the region (between 40 to 48hh), and encourage grass to grow between the rows of vines. All the wines undergo slow spontaneous fermentation, with moderated use of sulphites, and cuve ageing on fine lees is carried out for 6 to 8 months. The result is an excellent value wine with succulent chardonnay fruit, offering a well-balanced profile with a slightly salty and chalky aftertaste.
