Heidi Schröck, the steward of her family's 10-hectare estate in Rust, Burgenland, Austria, has been at the forefront of sustainable viticulture since taking over in 1983. The south-east facing vineyards near Lake Neusiedl benefit from an amphitheatre-like formation, providing more sunlight hours. The Junge Löwen, sourced from the 'Ruster' vineyard on the Rust Hill, is a blend of Blaufränkisch and St Laurent. The sandy loam, mica schist, and gneiss soils contribute to the wine's character. The grapes undergo manual harvesting, destemming, and fermentation, with Blaufränkisch in stainless steel and St Laurent in an open fermenter. After 10 months in Austrian oak, the wine displays a ruby-red hue, offering enticing aromas of cherry, black pepper, leather, and delicate tobacco hints. With smooth tannins, vibrant acidity, and an elegant finish, 'Junge Löwen' showcases the region's terroir beautifully.
