Yannick Meckert, an emerging talent in Alsace winemaking, has quickly established himself as one of the region's best young vignerons. Born into a family with both Burgundian and Alsatian roots, Yannick's journey in wine began at a young age. Disenchanted with his family's farming methods, he sought a different approach to winemaking. Yannick gained valuable experience working alongside renowned figures like Patrick Meyer, Phillipe Pacalet, and Clementine and Gianmarco of Le Coste. His diverse influences, including time spent learning sake in Japan, have shaped his unique winemaking style.
Yannick Meckert operates in Rosheim, Alsace, farming three and a half hectares of classic Alsatian varieties over clay and limestone. His vineyard practices focus on maintaining a diverse ecosystem, employing his take on organic agriculture without chemicals, copper, or sulfur. Yannick allows wild herbs, grass, and flowers to flourish around the vines, creating vibrant vineyards.
In the cellar, Yannick combines experience and intuition, adjusting vinification methods to suit the nuances of each variety and vintage. One of his creations is a blend of Auxerrois, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and a touch of Muscat from fifty-year-old vines in Obernai. Affected by hail, the grapes were pressed directly, blended with macerated Gewürztraminer, and left to rest in cuve for a year. This bistro-style wine, with hazy shades of pink and grey, dances across the palate, offering refreshing notes of zest, sea salt, and minerals—an excellent choice for an apéritif. Yannick Meckert's innovative and nature-centric approach signals a promising future for this talented grower.
