Château Fontarèche is one of the oldest estates in Corbières and carries exactly the kind of rugged Mediterranean energy you want from southern France. The château dates back centuries, complete with proper historic buildings and vineyards surrounded by dry hillsides filled with wild herbs, olive trees and enough sunshine to make northern Europeans emotionally reconsider their life choices.
Corbières itself is all about warmth, spice and character. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan thrive here, producing wines packed with dark fruit, herbs, liquorice and earthy richness. In the wrong hands the region can occasionally drift into heavy chaos, but Château Fontarèche manages to keep freshness and balance running underneath the generosity.
The estate farms sustainably and works with plenty of old vines, which gives the wines lovely concentration and texture. The reds especially feel wonderfully southern French. Savoury, spicy and slightly wild around the edges in a very charming way.
What makes Fontarèche particularly enjoyable is the sense of history without stuffiness. The château may be ancient, but the wines don’t feel trapped in dusty tradition. There’s polish and clarity here while still preserving all the rustic Mediterranean personality that makes Corbières so appealing.
The whites and rosés deserve attention too, especially in warm weather where the region’s natural brightness and herbal freshness become incredibly addictive.
Also, any wine region where rosemary seems to naturally float through the air at all times already has a fairly unfair advantage.
