Hazy IPA and New England IPA refer to the same modern style of India Pale Ale that has become one of the defining styles in contemporary craft beer. While the term “New England IPA” originated in the United States, “Hazy IPA” is now more widely used as a broader description for beers defined by soft texture, expressive hop aroma and a deliberately cloudy appearance.
Unlike traditional West Coast IPA, which tends to emphasise clarity, bitterness and resinous hop character, Hazy IPA is brewed to highlight hop aroma and fruit-forward flavour with a softer, smoother finish. Heavy late hopping and dry hopping techniques are used to maximise hop expression, often alongside oats or wheat in the grain bill to create fuller mouthfeel and the style’s signature haze.
