Some wineries spend years trying to convince people to pay attention to forgotten grape varieties. Succés Vinícola simply started making excellent wine from them.
Founded by Mariona Vendrell and Albert Canela in Catalonia, the project focuses heavily on Conca de Barberà and particularly on Trepat, a local grape that spent far too long being underestimated. The winery works organically and places strong emphasis on freshness, site expression and minimal intervention.
Trepat sits at the heart of many of the wines. Light-bodied, aromatic and full of red fruit, spice and freshness, it often feels closer to Jura reds or lighter alpine styles than the heavier reds many people expect from Spain. Bottlings like La Cuca de Llum have helped demonstrate just how distinctive the grape can be.
The whites are equally interesting, often built around Parellada and other regional varieties. Across the range there is a clear focus on energy, texture and drinkability rather than sheer power. The wines feel modern, but not in a way that disconnects them from local identity.
Conca de Barberà has become one of Spain’s most exciting regions for people who enjoy characterful, lower-intervention wines. Succés Vinícola are a large part of the reason why.
