Arpepe's Sassella Stella Retica is a traditional Nebbiolo (locally called Chiavennasca) from the Valtellina region in northern Lombardy, Italy. It's produced by Arpepe, a highly respected family-run estate known for their dedication to classical, slow winemaking methods. The wine comes specifically from the Sassella subzone, one of the most celebrated crus of Valtellina, characterized by steep, rocky slopes that force vineyard work to be entirely manual. Stella Retica is aged for several years in large old chestnut and oak casks before bottling, allowing the wine to develop complexity while maintaining a remarkable sense of freshness and precision.

In the glass, it usually shows a translucent, pale ruby hue typical of mountain Nebbiolo. Aromatically, it’s lifted and detailed, offering notes of alpine herbs, dried cherries, rose petals, crushed rocks, and often a distinct ferrous or bloody minerality that speaks to the iron-rich soils of the region. On the palate, the wine is taut, fine-boned, and elegant, driven by vibrant acidity and fine, chalky tannins rather than overt fruit concentration. It tends to balance savory depth with a luminous, almost weightless character, often finishing with a stony, saline snap. Despite its delicacy, Stella Retica is built to age beautifully, becoming more ethereal and complex over time.

Ar.Pe.Pe. is one of those producers that completely changes how people think about Nebbiolo once they discover it. Based in Valtellina in the far north of Lombardy, close to the Swiss border, the winery has been run by the Perego family since the 1980s, although the roots of the project go back much further. The name itself comes from founder Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, whose initials give the winery its now-iconic shortened form. Everything about Ar.Pe.Pe. feels deeply tied to mountain viticulture and a slower, more traditional approach to winemaking.

What makes the winery especially fascinating is the landscape they work in. Valtellina is dramatically steep, with terraced vineyards carved into mountainsides that rise above the Adda river valley. Much of the vineyard work has to be done entirely by hand because the slopes are simply too extreme for machinery. The region has been producing Nebbiolo for centuries, locally known as Chiavennasca, but the style here is very different from Barolo or Barbaresco. The mountain climate brings more freshness, delicacy, and tension into the wines, while the granite-rich soils give them a really distinctive mineral character.

Ar.Pe.Pe. have become one of the key names responsible for preserving and championing that identity. While many producers modernised heavily during the late 20th century, the Perego family stayed committed to extremely long ageing, large old oak casks, and patient winemaking that allows the wines to evolve slowly over time. Some of the wines spend years ageing before release, which feels increasingly rare in modern wine. Nothing about the winery feels rushed or trend-driven.

There’s also something quite emotional about the way people talk about Ar.Pe.Pe. once they get into the wines properly. The combination of altitude, old vines, mountain light, and traditional winemaking gives the wines a kind of haunting elegance that feels completely unique within Italian wine. Powerful in their own way, but never heavy. Complex and age-worthy, but still incredibly graceful and drinkable. It’s the sort of producer that quietly builds lifelong followers once people spend time with the wines.
