Het Boerenerf’s Pinot des Charentes (also known as Pineau des Charentes) is a creative lambic aged for an extra year in old oxidative Pineau des Charentes casks, which previously held the French fortified wine from Cognac’s Charente region. This extended maturation deepens complexity and infuses subtle oxidative and barrel-derived character.

It clocks in around 7.3 % ABV, bottled in standard 750 ml format . The result pours a warm, slightly amber-hued lambic—more wine-like in appearance than a typical pale lambic—with an aromatic profile expressing dried apricot, calamansi, cognac-like warmth, old oak, leather, pomme Williams, and subtle earthy, barnyard nuances.

On the palate it combines bright acidity and minerality—linked to its lambic roots—with dry, oxidative depth. Expect a palate like a nutty, dry sherry crossed with sparkling white wine: chalky, with tart citrus and stone fruit, wood tannins, a milky lactic mid-palate, and a lingering oak-tinged finish laced with cognac-like echoes and saline relics .

Brewing-wise, Het Boerenerf sources wort from established lambic breweries (such as 3 Fonteinen and Lindemans) and ages the lambics on site in a growing collection of oak barrels. The Pinot des Charentes is part of their grape lambic experiments, where wine barrels—this time Pineau des Charentes—are used to blend and age distinctive lambic expressions.

Its style blends three traditions: spontaneous fermentation, extended barrel aging, and oxidative maturation in Cognac casks, resulting in a highly original beverage that sits between lambic, sherry, and sparkling wine—complex, textured, and expressive.

Serve chilled in a tulip or wine glass, and enjoy as a contemplative treat or pair with aged cheeses, pâté, shellfish, or desserts featuring dried fruit and nuts. This is a standout offering from Het Boerenerf’s barrel-aged repertoire—elegant, experimental, and deeply rooted in regional fermentation culture.
