Maison des Saules' 'La Madeleine' Chardonnay from the Côtes du Jura is a compelling expression of Jura's unique terroir and winemaking philosophy. Crafted from 100% Chardonnay grapes grown on grey marl and clay soils in Villeneuve-sous-Pymont, the vineyard benefits from a western exposure at an altitude of 350 meters. The vines, approximately 10 years old, are cultivated using organic and biodynamic practices, with the estate aiming for certification.

The winemaking approach is minimalist and natural. Grapes are hand-harvested, directly pressed, and undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. The wine is aged for 12 months in old oak barrels on its lees, without fining or filtration, and no sulfur is added during vinification.

In the glass, 'La Madeleine' presents a bright golden hue. The nose offers a bouquet of ripe peach, green apple, and white flowers, creating a harmonious and inviting aroma.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet fresh, with a dynamic tension that drives its profile. Flavors of lemon and apple burst forth, accompanied by a subtle smokiness and a lip-smacking sourness that adds complexity . The balanced freshness is complemented by a pleasant creaminess, leading to a long, persistent finish.

This wine exemplifies the potential of Jura Chardonnay, combining traditional practices with a modern, natural approach to winemaking.

Maison des Saules

Style: Winery

Country: France

Region: Jura

Jura has become one of those wine regions capable of causing mild panic among sommeliers whenever tiny-production bottles appear on a list. Maison des Saules sit firmly in that exciting new generation of growers treating the region’s traditions with respect while keeping things fresh and energetic.

Based near Lons-le-Saunier, the estate is run by Marc Lacroix and Anne-Cécile Daubigney, farming organically and biodynamically across marl-rich Jura vineyards. Chardonnay and Savagnin form the backbone of the range, often aged patiently in old barrels with a fairly low-intervention approach.

The wines themselves carry that wonderfully distinctive Jura combination of freshness, texture and savoury complexity. Chardonnay shows citrus, nuts and mineral tension, while Savagnin moves into spice, salt and lightly oxidative territory without becoming overpowering. Even the younger cuvées feel vibrant and energetic rather than overly serious.

Jura itself remains brilliantly idiosyncratic. Tiny vineyards, strange local grapes, oxidative ageing traditions and wines that pair suspiciously well with Comté cheese and winter evenings. Maison des Saules capture that atmosphere nicely while still feeling modern and approachable.

These are the sort of wines that make people start talking enthusiastically about soil types after two glasses. Usually a warning sign, but occasionally justified.
