A heavyweight among Belgian Trappist ales, and one of the most famous strong dark beers in the world, brewed by the monks of Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy in Rochefort, Belgium. It sits at the top of the Rochefort range, alongside the 6 and 8, but is widely regarded as the most intense and complex expression.

In the glass it pours a deep dark brown to near-black ruby, with a dense tan head. The aroma is immediately rich and layered: dark dried fruits (fig, prune, raisin), molasses, caramelised sugar, cocoa and warming spice.

On the palate, Rochefort 10 is full-bodied and intensely rich, with a core of dark fruit sweetness (dates, plum, black cherry) wrapped in toffee, brown sugar, chocolate and subtle liquorice spice. Despite its depth, it’s not cloying, there’s a firm backbone of yeast character and gentle bitterness that keeps it structured.

Abbaye De Rochefort

Style: Brewery

Country: Belgium

Region: Rochefort, Wallonia

Rochefort is one of those beers that completely lives up to the reputation. Brewed inside a Trappist monastery in Belgium, the range is rich, dark, complex, and built for slow drinking rather than rushing through. Expect deep layers of dark fruit, caramel, spice, soft bitterness, and warming alcohol, all wrapped up in that unmistakably smooth Trappist character. Proper contemplative beer, equally suited to cold evenings, strong cheese, or just disappearing into a good glass for an hour or two.
