Bodegas Señorío De Arana
Rioja Alavesa, Basque Country, Spain
Bodegas Señorío de Arana is a family winery based in Labastida, in Rioja Alavesa, the Basque Country’s corner of Spain’s famous Rioja wine region. The De Santiago family established the winery in the late 1970s, drawing on a longer family tradition of grape growing and winemaking. The aim is straightforward: make characterful Rioja that combines the region’s traditional strengths with modern, carefully controlled winemaking.
The vineyards are a big part of the story. With more than 100 hectares under its care, the winery works with classic Rioja varieties including Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, alongside Viura for white wine. Rioja Alavesa sits between the Ebro River and the Sierra de Cantabria, where Mediterranean warmth meets Atlantic influences. That combination helps give the wines ripe fruit while retaining freshness and structure.
Señorío de Arana’s wines appear under two main labels: Viña del Oja and Sommelier. Viña del Oja is the broad-ranging house collection, covering everything from young reds, whites and rosés through to Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. Sommelier focuses on more developed Crianza and Reserva wines, giving the range a little more emphasis on time in oak and the added complexity that comes with bottle age.
In the winery, modern temperature-controlled fermentation and careful grape selection help keep the wines consistent, while oak ageing plays an important role in the more mature bottlings. Depending on the wine, ageing can bring notes of vanilla, sweet spice and toasted wood alongside the cherry, plum and savoury character you’d expect from Rioja. Tempranillo provides the familiar backbone, while varieties such as Graciano and Mazuelo can add extra structure and complexity.
What makes Señorío de Arana worth knowing is its combination of family heritage, substantial vineyard holdings and a range that covers several styles of Rioja. Whether you’re after a youthful bottle for a midweek dinner or a more developed Reserva to go with roast lamb, this is a producer rooted firmly in the region’s traditions, without relying on the name Rioja alone to do all the talking.
