Domaine du Peyrou

Some southern French wines feel like they were built specifically for long lunches that accidentally become dinner. Domaine du Peyrou sits firmly in that category.

Based in the warm dry landscapes of the Languedoc, the domaine works with all the classic Mediterranean grapes, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and friends, producing reds full of dark fruit, herbs, spice and that comforting sun-baked richness southern France does so well. Thankfully, there’s enough freshness underneath that you do not immediately need a nap afterwards.

The wines feel rustic in a good way. Properly rustic. Olive tapenade, thyme, blackberries, cracked pepper and warm stone all show up, usually alongside the sudden desire to cook lamb over fire somewhere outdoors.

What keeps Domaine du Peyrou enjoyable is that the wines never feel overdesigned. Nobody seems desperately worried about international scores or luxury branding. They just taste like the place they come from.

The Languedoc can produce incredible value when the right growers are involved, and this is exactly the sort of producer that reminds you why people who know southern French wine get so excited about it.

Big comforting reds without any unnecessary drama attached.
