Domaine Jean Guiton
Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, France
Domaine Jean Guiton is a family-run estate based in Bligny-lès-Beaune, just south of Beaune in Burgundy. Jean Guiton established the domaine in 1975 with just two hectares of vines, gradually building up his holdings across the Côte de Beaune. His son Guillaume joined the business in the late 1990s and later took over, developing a range that reflects the different villages and vineyard sites around the estate.
Today, the domaine works around 11.5 hectares spread across a dozen appellations, including Pommard, Volnay, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Beaune, Ladoix and Pernand-Vergelesses. Pinot Noir makes up most of the production, with Chardonnay and Aligoté providing the whites. This spread of vineyards gives the range plenty of variety, from approachable regional Burgundy to more structured Premier Cru wines.
The reds focus on classic Côte de Beaune character, with cherry and other red-fruit flavours, earthy notes and fine tannins. The more structured wines, particularly from Pommard and the Premier Cru vineyards, have the concentration and backbone to develop with bottle age. The whites offer a different side of Burgundy, with fresh orchard fruit and lively acidity, particularly in the Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and Aligoté bottlings.
Guillaume takes a hands-on approach in the vineyards and cellar, aiming to preserve the character of each site rather than making every wine taste the same. The wines are traditionally aged in oak barrels for around 18 months, with a proportion of new oak adding texture and spice without dominating the fruit.
Domaine Jean Guiton is a useful name to know for exploring the Côte de Beaune beyond its most famous estates. With vineyards spread across several well-regarded appellations, the range offers a chance to see how Pinot Noir changes from village to village, alongside whites that show the fresher side of Burgundy.
