Domaine Josmeyer
Alsace, France
Domaine Josmeyer is one of Alsace’s great historic producers and the sort of winery that reminds you just how exciting Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer can be when they’re made with precision instead of turning into aggressively perfumed headache fuel. Based in Wintzenheim near Colmar, the domaine has been family-run for generations and has become one of the leading names in biodynamic Alsace winemaking.
The wines here are all about energy, texture and clarity. Even the richer varieties stay vibrant and lifted, balancing ripe fruit with stony minerality and proper acidity. Riesling comes packed with lime, citrus oil and wet stone freshness, while Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer manage the difficult task of being aromatic and expressive without feeling like somebody sprayed perfume directly into your glass.
Josmeyer’s approach in the vineyard is deeply connected to biodynamic farming and low-intervention winemaking, but the wines never feel overly wild or unstable. There’s a calm confidence running through everything they produce. The focus is always on purity, site expression and drinkability rather than making wines that scream for attention.
One of the best things about Domaine Josmeyer is how versatile the wines are with food. Alsace wines can sometimes get unfairly pigeonholed into “Christmas wine” territory, but Josmeyer bottles work beautifully with everything from spicy food and seafood to rich roast dinners and terrifyingly expensive cheese boards you promised yourself you wouldn’t buy.
