Domaine Les Bruyères Hermitage

Crozes-Hermitage, Northern Rhône, France

Domaine Les Bruyères is one of the standout names in the northern Rhône and proof that Syrah can be both seriously complex and outrageously drinkable at the same time. Run by David Reynaud, the domaine is based in Crozes-Hermitage and has become hugely respected for organic and biodynamic farming long before it became fashionable enough to appear on every wine back label in existence.

The wines here are classic northern Rhône in personality but with a freshness and purity that makes them feel incredibly modern. Syrah is the star of the show, delivering dark berries, cracked pepper, smoked herbs, violets and that slightly savoury olive tapenade edge that Rhône fans get very emotional about after a couple of glasses. The tannins stay polished, the fruit stays bright, and the wines somehow manage to feel powerful without becoming exhausting.

What makes Domaine Les Bruyères especially appealing is the balance running through the entire range. Even the richer cuvées carry loads of energy and lift rather than drifting into overly alcoholic “winter radiator wine” territory. The whites are excellent too, with Marsanne and Roussanne bringing texture, stone fruit and floral character while still keeping freshness intact.

There’s also a lovely honesty to the winemaking. Low intervention, careful farming and patience all play a huge role, but nothing feels forced or ideological. The wines simply taste like very good northern Rhône made by people who deeply understand their vineyards and don’t feel the need to overcomplicate things for attention.
