Factory Brewing comes out of Finland with a brewing style that manages to feel modern and hop-forward while still keeping things clean, balanced and ridiculously drinkable underneath. Based in Helsinki, the brewery has built a strong following across Europe for juicy IPAs, crisp lagers and rich stouts that avoid a lot of the over-the-top chaos modern craft beer sometimes disappears into.
The hoppy beers are probably what most people notice first. Loads of citrus, tropical fruit and soft bitterness, but without turning into full-on fruit smoothie territory. Factory Brewing tends to keep enough structure and bitterness around to remind you you’re still drinking beer rather than alcoholic juice cartons.
The brewery also does darker styles very well, particularly pastry stouts and porters with plenty of chocolate, coffee and roasted malt character without becoming painfully sweet. There’s a nice level of restraint running through the range generally. Big enough flavours to stay interesting, sensible enough that you still want another pint afterwards.
Part of the appeal with Factory Brewing is how polished everything feels. The branding is clean, the beers are consistent and there’s a quiet confidence running through the whole brewery rather than endless hype-chasing. Finland’s beer scene has become seriously good over the last few years and Factory sits comfortably among the country’s best modern producers.
