Gabrielskloof
Walker Bay, Western Cape, South Africa
Gabrielskloof is one of the wineries helping push South Africa firmly into the conversation as one of the most exciting wine-producing countries in the world right now. Based in the Bot River area of Walker Bay, the estate benefits from cooling ocean influence that keeps the wines fresh and structured while still allowing plenty of ripe fruit to develop under the Cape sunshine.
The winery has built a strong reputation for Syrah and Chenin Blanc in particular, although the whole range tends to carry the same polished but unfussy style. The Syrahs often lean savoury and peppery rather than hugely jammy, with dark fruit, herbs and spice sitting alongside a fresher, more restrained feel than many people expect from warmer climate reds. The Chenins meanwhile combine bright citrus and stone fruit with texture and gentle richness, showing exactly why South Africa has become one of the world’s best places for the grape.
One of the nicest things about Gabrielskloof is that the wines feel modern without chasing trends. There’s plenty of precision and careful winemaking, but they still taste like wines made from vineyards rather than laboratory projects designed by committee.
The estate also works closely with growers across the Cape, helping highlight cooler vineyard sites and lesser-known areas that are bringing a huge amount of energy into South African wine at the moment. You get the sense that the winery is deeply connected to the wider region rather than existing as an isolated luxury project.
There’s a confidence to Gabrielskloof that makes the wines very easy to enjoy. Serious enough to impress people who know their wine, relaxed enough that you never feel like you need to overthink the bottle sitting in front of you. Which honestly is usually the sweet spot.
