Il Folle
Sicily, Terre Siciliane, Italy
Il Folle means “the mad one” in Italian, a name that suits this approachable range of Sicilian wines. The focus is on native grapes and the warm, generous character of the island, with wines that are full of fruit but retain enough freshness to keep them lively. The range includes both Grillo and Nero d’Avola, two varieties that show different sides of Sicily.
The white Grillo is bright and aromatic, with citrus, nectarine, tropical fruit and hints of herbs and flowers. Grillo is particularly well suited to western Sicily, where it can ripen in the Mediterranean sun while retaining lively acidity. It makes a versatile white for seafood, shellfish and lighter pasta dishes, especially spaghetti alle vongole.
The red Nero d’Avola comes from hand-harvested grapes grown in the hills around Marsala. Sicily’s best-known red grape produces wines with ripe dark cherry, plum and warming spice, often with a soft, generous texture. It works well alongside grilled vegetables, tomato-based dishes, roast meats and mature cheeses.
The wines are certified organic, reflecting a commitment to more sustainable vineyard practices. Rather than leaning on elaborate winemaking or oak, Il Folle puts the emphasis on expressive fruit and easy drinking. It’s a straightforward introduction to Sicilian wine, with local varieties doing the talking and plenty of Mediterranean character in the glass.
