Le Pic

Terres Fidèles is a modern French wine project founded by Master of Wine Fergal Tynan, focused on discovering and expressing the character of some of southern France's less celebrated vineyard sites. The name means "Faithful Land", reflecting the project's central philosophy of remaining faithful to the land, the growers and the character of each individual site, while not being restricted by traditional winemaking conventions. Fergal's interest in the region developed through years of travelling and tasting throughout southern France, where he became convinced that the Roussillon and the surrounding foothills of the Pyrénées possessed far greater potential than their relatively modest international reputation suggested. He established Terres Fidèles to explore that potential, working alongside Emmanuel Cazes, a fourth-generation Roussillon winemaker, and a network of growers whose vineyards provide the foundation for the wines.

The project's heart is the Roussillon, one of the most dramatic wine-growing landscapes in France. Vineyards climb through the foothills of the Pyrénées and descend towards the Mediterranean, with steep slopes, rocky soils, ancient vines and a warm Mediterranean climate creating naturally low yields and intensely flavoured fruit. Terres Fidèles also works further inland in the Haute Vallée de l'Aude, where greater altitude and a cooler, wetter climate provide very different conditions for varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This contrast is fundamental to the project's philosophy. The Roussillon provides wines with Mediterranean generosity, mineral structure and texture, while the higher Aude valley brings greater tension, freshness and delicacy. Rather than forcing all of these places into a single house style, Terres Fidèles treats each vineyard and landscape as an opportunity to produce something distinct.

Much of the project's appeal comes from its relationships with old-vine growers and small vineyard sites. Terres Fidèles seeks out parcels that have a particular sense of place, often working with low-yielding vineyards planted to traditional southern French varieties including Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, Malbec and Viognier. The approach is deliberately hands-on but not interventionist for the sake of it. Grapes are generally harvested with freshness in mind, and the winemaking aims to preserve natural aromatics and brightness rather than extracting heavily simply because the warm Roussillon climate can produce powerful fruit. Some of the project's wines are made from sites or varieties that might traditionally qualify for more prestigious appellations, but are bottled under Vin de France or broader regional classifications when doing so gives the winemakers greater freedom over varieties and techniques.

Le Pic represents the more accessible and contemporary side of the Terres Fidèles project. The range comprises White, Rosé and Red wines made from vineyards in the foothills of the Pyrénées, designed to combine the character of southern France with a deliberately fresh, uncomplicated style. The wines are made entirely without oak and are fermented in stainless steel, keeping the fruit at the centre of the finished wine. The current Le Pic Rouge, for example, combines Merlot, Syrah and Portan from carefully selected foothill parcels, with cool nights and rocky, free-draining soils helping retain freshness. The White comes from cooler, high-altitude sites selected for aromatic intensity and freshness, while the Rosé follows the same philosophy of lightness and vibrancy. Even the packaging reflects the project's modern outlook, with Le Pic using lightweight bottles and recycled-fibre labels.

Beyond Le Pic, Terres Fidèles encompasses a much broader collection of wines, ranging from approachable bottles to serious, site-driven fine wines. Fidèle forms the fine-wine heart of the project, with small-production cuvées from exceptional old-vine sites in Maury, Collioure and the Agly Valley, while Camí del Drac focuses on native Roussillon varieties from high-altitude vineyards. Other ranges such as Mont Rocher explore old-vine southern French varieties, while Félicette provides a more playful outlet for experimental and expressive wines. The common thread is the desire to show what these often-overlooked landscapes can produce when the right sites, varieties and growers are given attention. Terres Fidèles therefore sits somewhere between traditional négociant and modern wine estate: it is rooted in the vineyards and people of southern France, but has the freedom to explore widely, select individual parcels and make wines that are faithful to their origins without being constrained by convention.
