Scotland’s brewing scene has become far more interesting over the last few years, and Moonwake feel very much part of that newer generation. Modern craft beer rooted in Scottish brewing culture without disappearing entirely into hype and pastry stout madness.
Based in Edinburgh, the brewery focuses heavily on hop-forward pale ales, lagers and seasonal releases built around balance and drinkability. The beers generally lean clean and polished, with plenty of citrus, tropical fruit and soft bitterness where appropriate, but without overwhelming everything underneath.
The lagers deserve particular attention because Scottish breweries increasingly seem to realise people genuinely enjoy crisp, properly made pilsner when somebody actually takes the time to brew it well. Moonwake’s lighter styles carry freshness and structure rather than simply existing as IPA alternatives.
Edinburgh itself suits the brewery nicely too. Historic pub culture mixed with a growing modern food and drink scene creates a good environment for breweries aiming slightly above standard session beer without becoming inaccessible.
There’s also a refreshing lack of overcomplication running through the range. Good ingredients, sensible brewing and beers designed to be finished rather than merely photographed.
