Newt Brew
Edinburgh & Musselburgh, Scotland
Newt Brew feels refreshingly straightforward in a beer world that occasionally becomes exhausting. Small-batch organic brewing from around Edinburgh with a clear focus on flavour, sustainability and making beer people actually want to drink more than once.
Originally started by Mike in Edinburgh’s New Town before expanding production into Musselburgh, the brewery works on relatively small-scale kit producing organic, vegan-friendly beers across cask, bottle and can formats.
The beers themselves lean clean and approachable. Pale ales, golden ales and modern session styles dominate much of the range, usually carrying soft citrus, stone fruit and gentle hop bitterness balanced by a tidy malt backbone underneath. There’s a freshness to the brewing that suits the lighter styles particularly well.
What makes Newt Brew interesting is the organic focus without the beer becoming worthy or self-consciously “green”. The beers still prioritise drinkability first, which honestly remains the correct approach. Organic ingredients, unfined beer and ethical production all sit naturally in the background rather than dominating the conversation.
These are very much pub beers in the best sense. Relaxed, balanced and quietly dependable once you settle into them.
