Overtone
Glasgow, Scotland
Founded by Bowei Wang and brewer Dan Miller, Overtone began with a simple ambition: make big, expressive beers that put flavour first. Brewing started in Glasgow in 2018, with Wang bringing the enthusiasm of a dedicated home brewer and Miller bringing experience from the American craft beer scene. The brewery quickly found its feet with Scottish drinkers, building a following for its hop-forward beers and distinctive, colourful can designs.
Hazy IPAs and pale ales became Overtone’s calling card. The brewery embraced modern American hop varieties, using them to build layers of tropical fruit, citrus, peach and resinous character. Its beers often combine a soft, juicy body with plenty of aromatic intensity, while stronger double IPAs push the hops and alcohol further. The aim is flavour without losing sight of how the beer actually drinks.
There is plenty beyond the hazy stuff, too. Overtone has brewed West Coast IPAs with firmer bitterness, crisp lagers, fruit-led beers and rich imperial stouts. Brassneck, its formidable imperial stout, is known for its deep chocolate, coffee and roasted malt character, while beers such as Atomic and Klang show the range of styles the brewery explores. A constantly changing line-up allowed the team to experiment with new hop combinations and revisit popular recipes without becoming tied to a rigid core range.
In February 2026, the original company entered compulsory liquidation, bringing a difficult chapter for the brewery and its staff. The Overtone brand and business assets were subsequently acquired by Glasgow-based Inn House Brewery Company. Brewing has since resumed under the new ownership, giving the brand a chance to continue while building on the reputation established by the original team.
Overtone has become a recognisable name in Scottish craft beer through its confident flavours, creative recipes and willingness to explore different styles. Its story has changed with the transfer of ownership, but the beers remain associated with the bold, hop-driven approach that made the brewery popular in the first place. For anyone who enjoys modern IPAs, well-made stouts and a brewery that likes to keep things moving, Overtone is still worth watching.
