Sijnn Wines

Some vineyards look difficult. Sijnn looks actively unreasonable.

Located in Malgas near the Breede River, the project was founded by South African winemaker David Trafford after discovering a landscape covered in ancient river stones that reminded him of parts of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Most people would probably have chosen somewhere easier.

The vineyards sit in one of South Africa’s most remote wine regions, planted largely with Rhône and Mediterranean varieties including Syrah, Mourvèdre, Touriga Nacional and Chenin Blanc. The rocky soils and warm climate produce wines with concentration, but the maritime influence helps preserve freshness.

The reds often show dark berry fruit, herbs, spice and a distinctive stony character that seems to run through the entire range. The white blend combines texture and richness with bright acidity, developing complexity beautifully over time.

What makes Sijnn particularly compelling is that the wines feel completely tied to their landscape. They do not really resemble anything else from South Africa, which is usually a very good sign.
