Swannay Brewery
Orkney, Scotland
Orkney produces whisky, ancient history and weather that occasionally feels personally directed against you. It also produces some remarkably good beer.
Swannay Brewery operates from a farmstead on the northwestern edge of Orkney Mainland, surrounded by Atlantic winds, open farmland and exactly the sort of landscape that makes sturdy brewing traditions feel entirely logical.
The brewery built its reputation through a wide range of styles including pale ales, stouts, Scottish ales and stronger seasonal releases. Beers like Orkney IPA and Orkney Blast have become particularly well known, combining modern hop character with a strong sense of balance and drinkability.
What makes Swannay stand out is versatility. The brewery comfortably moves between traditional Scottish influences and more contemporary styles without losing its identity. Nothing feels forced or trend-chasing.
The setting matters too. Orkney has a distinct sense of place, and the beers often feel shaped by that environment. Windswept, characterful and considerably more welcoming than the weather forecast sometimes suggests.
