Irancy, Burgundy, France

Chablis often gets discussed through famous domaines and grand cru vineyards, but some of the region’s most satisfying wines come from growers who focus less on prestige and more on farming. Thierry Richoux fits comfortably into that category.

Working in Irancy and the wider northern Burgundy area, Richoux has become known for organic viticulture and wines that emphasise freshness, balance and site expression rather than heavy cellar influence.

The reds are particularly interesting because Irancy remains one of Burgundy’s less celebrated villages. Pinot Noir dominates, often supported by small amounts of César, an old local grape that adds spice, structure and a slightly wilder edge to the wines. Expect red berries, herbs, earth and bright acidity rather than heavy extraction.

There is a straightforward honesty to the wines. Vineyard character remains central, oak stays in the background and everything feels designed for drinking with food rather than collecting points.

Northern Burgundy rarely needs much embellishment when the vineyards are this good.
