The south of France produces a huge amount of wine, but Gérard Bertrand has spent years trying to prove that Languedoc can deliver far more than simple sunshine and volume. Villa Blanche sits at the more approachable end of that wider project, focusing on varietal wines that highlight freshness and regional character without becoming overly complicated.
Based in the Pays d’Oc, the range covers varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah and Pinot Noir. The idea is fairly straightforward. Take Mediterranean fruit, apply careful winemaking and let each grape speak clearly rather than burying everything beneath oak or extraction.
The reds tend to show ripe berry fruit, spice and soft tannins, while the whites lean towards citrus, stone fruit and freshness. The Syrah in particular has become one of the better-known wines in the range, combining dark fruit and richness with enough balance to keep things moving.
What makes Villa Blanche appealing is that it captures a lot of what makes modern Languedoc successful. Accessible wines, plenty of flavour and enough regional identity to remain interesting without requiring a lengthy explanation before opening the bottle.
