Weingut Hajszan Neumann
Vienna, Austria
Vienna remains one of the few major world capitals with serious vineyards growing inside the city limits. Hajszan Neumann sits right in the middle of that unusual and rather charming situation.
Based in Grinzing at the foot of the famous Nussberg vineyard, the winery works biodynamically and focuses heavily on expressing Vienna's distinctive wine culture. Since 2014 the estate has been operated by the Wieninger family, with a strong emphasis on sustainable farming and low-intervention winemaking.
Wiener Gemischter Satz remains central to the range. This traditional Viennese field blend involves multiple grape varieties planted, harvested and fermented together, producing wines with texture, freshness, spice and a layered complexity that feels quite different from single-variety wines. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling also play important roles across the vineyards.
The wines often carry bright citrus, orchard fruit, mineral character and an energy that reflects both the cooler climate and the biodynamic approach. Nothing feels overworked. The vineyard remains very much in charge.
Vienna has one of the most distinctive urban wine cultures anywhere in Europe. Hajszan Neumann remains one of the producers showing exactly why it deserves more attention.
