Zagreus Winery
Upper Thracian Valley, Bulgaria
Bulgaria has one of Europe’s oldest winemaking traditions, yet much of the country’s most exciting wine still feels like a discovery. Zagreus is one of the producers making that increasingly difficult to ignore.
Founded in the Upper Thracian Valley, the winery controls around 120 hectares of vineyards and focuses heavily on Mavrud, one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most important native grape varieties. Preserving and showcasing Mavrud remains central to the winery’s philosophy.
The vineyards sit in a warm, dry part of the Thracian Plain where Mavrud, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot thrive. Across the range there is a clear emphasis on regional identity rather than simply reproducing international styles. Dark fruit, spice, structure and freshness all feature heavily in the reds.
Vinica remains the estate’s flagship wine. Produced from dried Mavrud grapes using a technique reminiscent of appassimento, it develops layers of black fruit, cocoa, spice and remarkable concentration while retaining balance and ageing potential. It has become one of the most celebrated Mavrud wines in Bulgaria.
What makes Zagreus particularly important is its commitment to local grapes at a time when many wineries still chase international recognition through familiar varieties.
The future of Bulgarian wine probably depends on producers embracing what makes the country distinctive. Zagreus understood that quite early on.
