Castello di Perno

Style: Winery

Country: Italy

Region: Barolo, Piedmont

Castello di Perno feels exactly how a Barolo winery inside an actual medieval castle should feel. Dramatic hilltop setting, ancient cellars, serious Nebbiolo and enough Piedmontese atmosphere to make you immediately want truffle pasta and very expensive wool coats.

Located in Monforte d’Alba in the heart of Barolo country, the estate combines centuries of history with modern organic farming and thoughtful winemaking. The castle itself dates back hundreds of years and now overlooks vineyards producing some of Piedmont’s most structured and age-worthy wines. Which feels wonderfully appropriate because Nebbiolo absolutely loves a dramatic setting.

The wines focus heavily on Barolo and other classic Langhe styles, with Nebbiolo naturally taking centre stage. Expect rose petals, cherry, tar, dried herbs, earth and firm tannins that slowly soften into something hauntingly elegant over time. These are wines built for patience, although thankfully they usually offer enough charm young to stop people nervously staring at the cellar for twenty years.

What makes Castello di Perno particularly appealing is the balance between tradition and freshness. The wines clearly respect classic Barolo structure and complexity, but there’s also brightness and precision keeping everything energetic rather than heavy or overly austere.

There’s also the unavoidable fact that wine simply tastes cooler when it comes from a castle. Humans are apparently very predictable like that.

Still, beyond the scenery and history, the important part is that the wines genuinely deliver. Proper serious Piedmont with all the perfume, tension and slow-building complexity Nebbiolo lovers obsess over.
