Van Honsebrouck has spent generations producing some of Belgium’s most recognisable and gloriously distinctive beers, all while quietly operating out of West Flanders like brewing absurdly good beer is simply a normal family business activity. Founded in the 1800s and still family-run today, the brewery became internationally famous through brands like Kasteel and Bacchus, both of which showcase completely different sides of Belgian brewing culture.

Kasteel beers lean rich, strong and dangerously smooth, often pushing well past 10% ABV while somehow remaining absurdly drinkable. The darker versions bring layers of caramel, dried fruit, chocolate and warming spice that feel halfway between beer and liquid pudding. Meanwhile Bacchus heads in the completely opposite direction with traditional Flemish sour ales full of cherry, balsamic, oak and sweet-sour complexity. Belgium really does refuse to choose between styles when it can simply excel at all of them simultaneously.

What makes Van Honsebrouck especially enjoyable is how confidently traditional the brewery remains while still producing beers that feel vibrant and modern. The beers carry genuine regional identity rather than generic “Belgian-style” flavour profiles built in laboratories somewhere.

West Flanders itself is basically sacred territory for beer lovers. Sour ales, strong dark beers and mixed fermentation traditions all thrive here, and Van Honsebrouck sits comfortably inside that heritage. Big flavours, huge character and enough hidden alcohol to create poor decisions with alarming efficiency. Pretty much exactly what Belgian beer should do.
