Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet is one of the most exciting modern estates in Burgundy, based in the village of Fixin in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine was formed when Amélie Berthaut took over her family estate, Domaine Denis Berthaut, before later combining it with vineyards from her husband Nicolas Gerbet’s side of the family. Since assuming control in 2013, Amélie has become one of the defining younger winemakers in Burgundy, producing wines that balance traditional vineyard expression with greater precision, freshness and finesse than many older-school examples from the region.
The estate farms vineyards across Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot, producing both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a strong emphasis on terroir and balance. Farming practices have increasingly moved towards sustainability and careful vineyard work, while cellar practices remain relatively traditional and restrained in style.
Winemaking focuses on careful extraction, gentle handling and measured oak use designed to preserve vineyard character and aromatic clarity rather than overpowering the wines with heaviness or excessive wood influence. The resulting wines often show bright red fruit, floral aromatics, savoury detail and fine tannin structure alongside the freshness typical of modern Burgundy.
Berthaut-Gerbet has become especially admired for bringing elegance and definition to appellations such as Fixin, which were historically associated with firmer and more rustic wines. Today the domaine is widely regarded as one of Burgundy’s most sought-after grower estates, appreciated by collectors and sommeliers for wines that remain approachable in youth while also offering serious ageing potential.
