Sigognac

Style: Distillery

Country: France

Region: Bas-Armagnac, Gascony

Armagnac remains one of France’s great hidden treasures. Older than Cognac, slightly wilder around the edges and generally far less interested in marketing itself. Baron de Sigognac sits comfortably within that tradition.

Produced in Bas-Armagnac, the house focuses on long-aged spirits made from traditional regional grape varieties and matured slowly in oak. The region’s sandy soils and centuries of distillation history help create eaux-de-vie with remarkable depth and character.

The younger bottlings show dried fruit, spice, vanilla and fresh oak, while the older vintage releases gradually move into walnut, tobacco, leather and dark caramel territory. Good mature Armagnac often feels wonderfully layered without becoming overly polished.

One of the joys of Armagnac is that it still feels connected to farming and place. Vintage releases remain common, meaning you can drink spirits distilled decades ago without needing to remortgage the house.

For people who enjoy Cognac but want something earthier, richer and slightly less predictable, Sigognac usually makes a very convincing argument.
