Cragganmore 12 Year Old is a sherried single malt from Diageo's Classic Malts range, embodying the essence of Speyside with its rich, slightly floral character and notes of barley. Style: Distillery

Cragganmore is one of Speyside’s quiet geniuses. Not the loudest whisky, not the smokiest whisky and definitely not the most aggressively marketed whisky, but among people who actually spend time drinking Scotch properly, it has a reputation bordering on reverence.

Founded in 1869 by John Smith, one of the whisky industry’s great historical characters and apparently a man sensible enough to carry two pistols while working in distilling during the 1800s, Cragganmore sits beside the River Spey producing whisky famous for complexity and elegance rather than brute force.

What makes Cragganmore especially distinctive is the layered aromatic character. Honey, orchard fruit, herbs, malt, light smoke and floral notes all seem to unfold gradually rather than charging directly at your palate. There’s often a lovely waxy texture too, giving the whisky this almost silky depth underneath the freshness.

The distillery’s unusually flat-topped spirit stills and slow production methods help create that complexity, producing a spirit with remarkable subtlety and nuance. Which perhaps explains why whisky nerds often become deeply attached to it after revisiting the dram several times and suddenly realising how much is actually going on.

A huge amount of Cragganmore disappears into blends, particularly Johnnie Walker, but the single malts remain some of Speyside’s most underrated bottles.

There’s also something wonderfully old-fashioned about whisky that rewards patience rather than simply trying to overwhelm you immediately with smoke, sherry or alcohol strength.

Cragganmore just quietly unfolds instead. Very Speyside behaviour overall.
