Domaine de la Fessardière's Muscadet La Mer 2023 is a certified organic white wine from the Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine appellation in France's Loire Valley. Crafted from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grapes, the wine is produced from 70-year-old vines planted in shallow, stony silico-clay soils. Harvested by hand, the wine undergoes maturation on lees in old oak barrels, contributing to its complexity.

The wine presents a light, luminous gold color. On the nose, it offers aromas of white fruits like pear and Granny Smith apple, complemented by hawthorn and mineral notes. The palate is clean and precise, with a linear profile enhanced by a lovely salinity, embodying the spirit of Muscadet.

This Muscadet pairs well with seafood dishes, including oysters, langoustine, and skate wing, as well as veal blanquette, goat cheese, and apple tart.

Domaine de la Fessardière has been practicing organic viticulture for over 15 years, focusing on producing wines that reflect their terroir with minimal intervention .

Domaine de la Fessardière

Style: Winery

Country: France

Region: Loire Valley, Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine

Muscadet does not get anywhere near the love it deserves, which honestly is excellent news for people who enjoy crisp mineral white wine without Burgundy-level pricing attached. Domaine de la Fessardière sits right in the heart of that wonderfully underrated Loire Valley world, producing beautifully fresh Muscadet that feels built specifically for oysters, seafood and accidentally ordering another bottle.

The domaine farms organically around the Sèvre-et-Maine area, focusing heavily on Melon de Bourgogne, which remains one of the wine world’s most unfairly overlooked grapes. Done badly, Muscadet can feel thin and forgettable. Done properly, like here, it becomes salty, citrusy, mineral and ridiculously refreshing.

The wines lean clean and vibrant with loads of lemon peel, green apple, sea spray and chalky freshness. Sur Lie ageing adds texture and softness without taking away the razor-sharp acidity that makes the wines so addictive in the first place.

There’s also a lovely simplicity to the whole thing. No flashy oak, no overcomplicated winemaking and absolutely no need to explain terroir diagrams for forty minutes before opening the bottle. Just pure Loire freshness and very drinkable wine.

Muscadet has always been one of France’s great seafood wines. Domaine de la Fessardière makes a very convincing argument that it deserves far more attention in general.
