Utri Etna Rosso 2018 is a 100 % Nerello Mascalese from Eredi di Maio, grown on steep slopes of Etna around Spadatrappo at roughly 850 meters. The vineyards are old, yielding very low crop levels, and the wine is organically farmed (though uncertified), using ambient yeasts and modest production (about 753 bottles).

It shows a poised elegance: the nose brings red cherry, wild berry, and subtle floral notes, with hints of volcanic minerality and earthy undergrowth. On the palate it’s medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity, and a long finish that combines soft spice and mineral tension. Perfect when matched with roast meats or aged cheeses, or simply enjoyed on its own after decanting.

Eredi di Maio

Style: Winery

Country: Italy

Region: Campania

Eredi di Maio focuses on deeply traditional southern Italian winemaking, producing wines that feel unmistakably connected to Campania’s volcanic soils, warm Mediterranean climate and long agricultural history. The winery works primarily with native grape varieties, which means plenty of Aglianico, Fiano and Falanghina rather than international grapes trying to cosplay as Italian wine.

The range leans heavily into freshness, minerality and regional identity. Whites tend to deliver citrus, orchard fruit and saline character with plenty of bright acidity, while the reds bring darker fruit, spice and earthy structure without becoming overly heavy. There’s a rustic honesty running through the wines that feels very southern Italian in the best possible way. Generous, expressive and clearly built for food rather than tasting-room theatrics.

Campania’s volcanic terroir plays a huge role in shaping the wines, adding tension and mineral character underneath all the ripe Mediterranean fruit. That combination gives the wines impressive balance and keeps them feeling lively even when the flavours become richer and more savoury.

Part of the appeal with Eredi di Maio is how naturally approachable the wines feel despite all the regional character. You don’t need an encyclopaedic knowledge of Italian appellations to enjoy them. Put simply, they taste fantastic with actual food and become even better once there’s olive oil, tomato sauce or grilled meat somewhere nearby.
