Heaps Normal

Style: Alcohol Free Brewery

Country: Australia

Region: New South Wales

Heaps Normal are part of the newer wave of breweries proving alcohol-free beer doesn’t have to taste like punishment anymore. Founded in Australia, the whole project started with a pretty simple idea: make booze-free beer that still feels like proper craft beer instead of vaguely fizzy bread water somebody sadly ordered while driving home.

The brewery has become especially well known for their XPA, which genuinely drinks like a modern juicy pale ale rather than a compromise. Loads of citrus, tropical hops and soft bitterness, all without the weird thin sweetness a lot of alcohol-free beer still struggles with. It tastes like people who actually enjoy beer were involved in making it, which sounds obvious but historically absolutely wasn’t guaranteed in this category.

Part of what makes Heaps Normal work is that they never really treat non-alcoholic beer like some miserable health product. The branding is relaxed, colourful and funny, and the whole thing feels built around normal social drinking rather than guilt, detox culture or “wellness journeys”. You get the sense they’d still rather be in the pub than at a yoga retreat.

The brewery has also become surprisingly important in changing how alcohol-free beer gets viewed generally, especially with younger drinkers who want decent beer options without always wanting the alcohol attached. Turns out people quite like waking up functional occasionally.

Even if you normally avoid low or no alcohol beer entirely, Heaps Normal is one of the breweries that tends to change minds pretty quickly. Modern hops, proper flavour and none of the sad compromise energy older alcohol-free beer became infamous for.
