More About Herdade do Peso Trinca Bolotas Alentejo Tinto

From Portugal’s Alentejo region, Trinca Bolotas is all about ripe fruit, warmth, and generosity. Packed with flavours of black cherry, plum, and blackberry, it’s a smooth, full-flavoured red with plenty of richness but no rough edges.

A blend of traditional Portuguese varieties gives the wine its juicy character and soft texture, while a touch of oak adds hints of cocoa, sweet spice, and vanilla in the background. There’s enough freshness to stop things becoming heavy, making it just as suited to a midweek dinner as a big weekend meal.

Dark-fruited, comforting, and easy to enjoy, this is the kind of bottle that consistently punches above its weight. Great with grilled meats, slow-cooked dishes, or a generous board of cheeses and charcuterie.

Meet the Producer, Herdade do Peso

Herdade do Peso

Style: Winery

Herdade do Peso is an estate in Vidigueira, in Portugal’s Alentejo region, developed by the Guedes family and Portuguese wine group Sogrape over several decades. Sogrape began making wine in the Alentejo in the early 1990s and acquired the estate in 1996, investing in vineyards and a dedicated winery. Today, it is one of the group’s key properties, with a focus on expressing the character of this particular corner of southern Portugal.

Vidigueira is an interesting place to make wine. The Alentejo is known for its hot, dry summers and generous, full-bodied reds, but Vidigueira has traditionally been associated with white wines. Its position and local conditions help retain freshness, giving the region a little more lift than you might expect from southern Portugal. The estate has around 160 hectares of vines, with both Portuguese and international varieties planted across different soils.

The red vineyards include Aragonez, the local name for Tempranillo, alongside Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The whites include Antão Vaz, Arinto and Viognier. Winemaker Luís Cabral de Almeida works closely with the vineyard team to match grape varieties to individual plots, using the differences in soil and site to shape the wines rather than treating the estate as one uniform vineyard.

The range includes Revelado, a blend intended to capture the wider character of the estate, Reserva, made from selected parcels in stronger vintages, and Parcelas, which focuses on individual vineyard plots. The reds tend towards ripe dark fruit, spice and generous texture, with acidity and firm tannins helping to keep them balanced. The whites offer a fresher side of the Alentejo, with citrus, stone fruit and an appealing mineral edge.

Herdade do Peso brings together modern Portuguese winemaking and the distinctive conditions of Vidigueira. The scale of the estate allows the team to explore different grape varieties and soils, while the focus on individual plots gives the more ambitious wines a stronger sense of place. It is a useful name to know for Alentejo, especially if you enjoy southern Portuguese reds with plenty of fruit and structure, alongside whites that show the region can offer freshness as well as richness.
