More About Hopf Spezial Weisse

Hopf Spezial Weisse is a stronger, richer take on the traditional Bavarian wheat beer, brewed by Weißbierbrauerei Hopf in Miesbach. It pours a distinctive reddish-gold, with a fuller malt character and plenty of the fruity yeast character you'd expect from a proper Bavarian Weißbier.

Ripe banana and freshly baked bread lead the way, followed by clove spice and a gentle caramel sweetness from the malt. The texture is full and rounded, with lively carbonation keeping things fresh and a warming finish that suits the extra strength. A lovely choice for anyone who enjoys their wheat beer with a little more depth.

Meet the Producer, Weissbierbrauerei Hopf

Weissbierbrauerei Hopf

Style: Brewery

Weißbierbrauerei Hopf has been brewing in Miesbach, Upper Bavaria, since 1892, specialising in Bavarian wheat beer. The Hopf family took over the brewery in 1921, establishing the business that gave it its name. Located south of Munich, close to Tegernsee and Schliersee, it remains closely connected to the local beer culture. This is a brewery with a clear focus: making Weissbier properly, with enough variety to keep things interesting.

Wheat beer has always been the heart of the operation, and Hopf has spent decades refining the style. Its Helle Weiße is the classic starting point, a golden, naturally cloudy Hefeweizen with banana-like fruit, gentle spice and a soft, refreshing finish. Dunkle Weiße takes a maltier route, using dark wheat and barley malts for toasted, bread-like flavours alongside the familiar fruity character of wheat beer.

Hopf has also been willing to experiment within its speciality. In 1985, it was an early adopter of lighter wheat beer, developing a reduced-alcohol version at a time when the category was far less established. It followed with an alcohol-free Weissbier in 2007 and later introduced alcohol-free Radler options. The range now includes lighter beers, seasonal releases and stronger wheat beer styles, showing how much variation there is within a single traditional category.

For something more substantial, Weißer Bock and Muospacher Bockfotzn offer a stronger take on wheat beer. The latter was brewed to mark Miesbach’s 900th anniversary in 2014 and comes in at 8% ABV. It has a fuller malt body, pronounced yeast character and warming strength, with a name rooted in Bavarian dialect. It is a good example of Hopf’s connection to its home town, where local celebrations and beer have long gone hand in hand.

Hopf places importance on regional ingredients, using hops and malt from nearby growing areas and water from the Leitzach Valley. The brewery has also received repeated recognition from Germany’s agricultural society, the DLG, for the quality of its beers. It may not be chasing the latest brewing trends, but Hopf has spent more than a century developing its own corner of Bavarian beer culture. If you enjoy classic Weissbier, from an easy-drinking Hefeweizen to a hefty wheat bock, this is a brewery worth knowing.
