Karg

Style: Brewery

Country: Germany

Region: Franconia, Bavaria

Karg is Franconian lager brewing at its absolute best. No gimmicks, no cartoon branding, no triple dry-hopped coconut stout nonsense, just deeply traditional German beer made by people who clearly think lager deserves to be taken seriously. Which, after a pint or two, is very hard to argue with.

Based in Bavaria’s Franconia region, the brewery is best known for Weissbier and Kellerbier styles that lean soft, fresh and unbelievably drinkable. The wheat beers especially have that classic Bavarian balance nailed perfectly. Banana, clove, fresh bread and gentle spice all sitting together without anything becoming overly sweet or heavy. Proper pub garden half-litre material.

The Kellerbier side gets especially interesting though. Slight haze, bready malt, herbal hops and that smooth rounded texture traditional unfiltered German lager does so well. Feels rustic without being rough around the edges.

Franconia in general tends to get overlooked outside Germany despite being one of the greatest lager regions on earth. Tiny breweries everywhere, centuries-old beer culture and locals treating fresh lager like a basic human right. Karg fits perfectly into that world.

The whole thing feels refreshingly unconcerned with trends too. Nobody here is trying to reinvent beer. They already solved it years ago.
