A southern Italian red from Puglia, made entirely from the indigenous Nero di Troia grape a variety known for producing structured, deeply coloured wines with a balance of ripe fruit and gentle tannic grip. The wine comes from Cantina Diomede, a large organically farmed estate in northern Puglia near Canosa.

In the glass it shows a ruby red colour with violet reflections, immediately suggesting freshness alongside ripeness. The nose is expressive but not heavy, with mulberry, cherry and red berry fruit, sometimes drifting into subtle floral tones like violet.

On the palate it’s described as full-bodied but soft and balanced, with a smooth texture and delicate, fine-grained tannins rather than anything aggressive or drying.

Cantina Diomede

Style: Winery

Country: Italy

Region: Puglia

Cantina Diomede sits deep in northern Puglia where sunshine, limestone soils and ancient grape varieties combine into wines that taste unapologetically southern Italian in the best possible way. The winery takes its name from the Greek hero Diomedes, who according to local legend arrived in Puglia after the Trojan War and planted vines across the region. Which is either beautifully mythological or the ancient world’s most dramatic vineyard expansion project.

The estate focuses heavily on native grapes like Nero di Troia, Bombino Bianco and Aglianico, varieties perfectly suited to Puglia’s hot climate and rugged landscape. Nero di Troia especially is the star here, producing wines packed with dark fruit, spice, herbs and soft earthy tannins that somehow feel both rustic and polished at the same time.

What’s nice about Cantina Diomede is how firmly rooted it feels in local identity. The winery leans into traditional Puglian winemaking culture while still using modern techniques to keep the wines clean, balanced and approachable. There’s warmth and generosity throughout the range, but without tipping into the heavy overripe style southern Italy can sometimes fall into.

The vineyards themselves sit around Castel del Monte, an area full of limestone hills and ancient agricultural history, which gives the wines freshness and structure underneath all the Mediterranean fruit. The reds especially feel built for food. Grilled meats, tomato-based dishes, hard cheeses, things involving olive oil and zero restraint, basically the full southern Italian experience.

There’s also something wonderfully honest about the whole project. These are not wines trying to imitate Bordeaux or impress investment bankers at private tastings. They’re proudly Puglian wines made for actual drinking, which is usually where Italy does its best work anyway.
