More About Lochlea Overtone Over and Stout

Crafted by the independent, family-run Lochlea Distillery in Ayrshire, this final collaboration with Overtone Brewery blends whisky-making and brewing craft in perfect harmony. Made from just five casks—three seasoned with Overtone stout (two ex-bourbon and one STR barrique), plus a first-fill bourbon and an ex-peated bourbon cask—it delivers rich chocolatey earthiness, sweet vanilla, and a hint of gentle smoke.

Bottled at 52% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural in colour, this limited release adds a deeper, warmer dimension to Lochlea’s signature style and marks a fitting conclusion to the partnership.

Meet the Producer, Lochlea Distillery

Lochlea Distillery

Style: Whisky Distillery

Scotland has plenty of distilleries trading heavily on heritage, but Lochlea manage to feel refreshingly modern while still being deeply tied to place. Which is harder than it sounds in whisky.

Based on a working farm in Ayrshire, Lochlea are one of the newer names in Scotch whisky, though the land itself carries proper historical weight. Robert Burns once lived and worked here, which whisky marketing departments understandably became quite excited about. Thankfully the whisky itself backs things up.

What separates Lochlea from a lot of newer distilleries is the single-estate approach. They grow their own barley on-site, distil it themselves and mature the whisky on the same farm. That level of control gives the whisky a very coherent style. Bright, cereal-led Lowland spirit with orchard fruit, vanilla, soft spice and a clean freshness running through it. Even the sherry cask releases tend to retain balance rather than disappearing entirely into Christmas cake territory.

The seasonal releases are particularly interesting because they tie directly into the farming calendar. Sowing, Harvest, Fallow and Ploughing editions each lean slightly differently stylistically, often introducing wine casks or gentle peat influence while still keeping the distillery character intact. (lochleadistillery.com) There’s a calm confidence to the whole range. Modern whisky without endless gimmicks attached.

Lochlea also feels properly independent in spirit. No visitor centre designed like an airport lounge, no theatrical Viking branding, just a working farm making very good whisky. Though slightly cruelly, they’re not currently open to the public, which means whisky fans must admire from a respectful distance for now.
