A classic expression of Arneis from Roero in Piedmont, this is a wine that shows how far the grape has come, once dismissed as simple, now treated with real precision and capable of producing some of Italy’s most quietly complex whites.

In the glass it’s typically pale straw with a slight golden tint, and the nose leans into a mix of pear, apple and citrus, alongside softer notes of white flowers and a faint almond or hazelnut edge, a hallmark of the variety.

On the palate it’s dry, fresh and lightly textured, with flavours of stone fruit, lemon and green apple, but what defines it is the balance between softness and structure. Arneis naturally has a slightly broader, rounder feel than sharper Italian whites, but here it’s kept in check by bright acidity and a subtle mineral backbone, thanks to the sandy soils of Roero.

Matteo Correggia

Style: Winery

Country: Italy

Region: Piedmont, Roero

Roero often lives slightly in Barolo’s shadow despite producing some of Piedmont’s most elegant and quietly brilliant wines. Matteo Correggia spent years helping change that perception before his untimely death in 2001, and the estate remains one of the region’s defining names.

Based in Canale in the Roero hills, the winery focuses heavily on Nebbiolo alongside Arneis and Barbera, farming sandy soils that produce more lifted, aromatic wines than neighbouring Barolo. The estate itself still feels deeply connected to Matteo’s original vision. Ambitious, quality-focused and proudly rooted in Roero rather than trying to imitate more famous regions.

The Nebbiolo wines tend to show rose petals, sour cherry, spice and soft earthy tannins with a slightly gentler structure than Barolo. There’s elegance and perfume here rather than brute force. The Roero Arneis deserves attention too, bringing pear, herbs and almond notes with lovely freshness underneath.

What makes Correggia particularly interesting is the combination of modern precision and regional authenticity. The wines feel polished, but never anonymous. You still get a proper sense of Roero’s sandy soils and cooler elegance.

Roero overall remains slightly underrated internationally, which honestly benefits drinkers enormously. Piedmont character without quite the same financial damage attached.
