More About Maxlrainer Festbier

A traditional Bavarian Märzen from Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain, brewed with a blend of light and dark malts that gives it a deep golden colour and a rounded, full-bodied character. At 5.8%, it's a little richer than a typical Festbier, with a gentle sweetness balanced by fresh carbonation and a crisp, lightly bitter finish.

Meet the Producer, Maxlrainer

Maxlrainer

Style: Brewery

Maxlrainer Schlossbrauerei has been brewing in Upper Bavaria since 1636, when the brewery was first recorded at Maxlrain Castle, around 45 kilometres south of Munich. Today, it remains a privately owned Bavarian brewery run by the von Lobkowicz family. Its approach is rooted in traditional brewing, with a small, experienced team focused on making classic Bavarian beers properly rather than chasing every new trend.

The range covers the styles you would expect from a Bavarian brewery, including Helles, Weissbier, Pils, Dunkel and seasonal strong beers. Maxlrainer Helles is a classic example of the style, with a golden colour, soft malt character and gentle bitterness. Its wheat beers bring a fuller, fruitier profile, while the darker lagers lean into toasted malt and richer flavours.

The brewery puts considerable emphasis on its ingredients. It works with regional farmers who grow traditional malting barley varieties, sources its hops from the Hallertau, and draws brewing water from its own spring. It also gives its beers several weeks to mature, with some taking up to six weeks from brewing to delivery. That patience helps produce the rounded, balanced character associated with traditional Bavarian lagers.

Maxlrainer has earned a strong reputation for consistency, receiving Germany’s Federal Honor Award every year since 2008. It has also been named Germany’s Brewery of the Year in 2012, 2016 and 2024. In 2023, it joined the Slow Brewing initiative, which recognises breweries for their approach to quality and production.

Alongside its traditional Maxlrainer beers, the brewery has developed the Original Maxl range, offering a more contemporary take on its established brewing identity. Across both ranges, the emphasis remains on quality ingredients, careful maturation and beers made to be enjoyed with food or shared over a long afternoon in a Bavarian beer garden. Maxlrainer is a good example of a regional brewery keeping classic German beer traditions alive through consistency and craft.
