Perello

Style: Snacks

Country: Spain

Region: Catalonia

Some food brands quietly become cult objects without really intending to. Perello olives managed exactly that. What began as a Spanish family business supplying olives and preserved goods somehow ended up with brightly coloured tins appearing in natural wine bars, deli counters and vaguely fashionable kitchens everywhere.

Founded in Spain in the 1960s, the company became particularly associated with Gordal olives. Large, fleshy and deeply savoury olives that somehow disappear alarmingly quickly once opened. The chilli-stuffed versions in particular have developed something close to a fanbase at this point.

The appeal comes partly from balance. Good olives should carry salt, bitterness, fruitiness and texture rather than simply tasting aggressively brined. Perello generally gets that right. The pickled guindilla peppers and antipasti range follow the same idea. Bright acidity, proper texture and enough punch to wake up a plate of charcuterie immediately.

There is also something very Spanish about the whole thing. These are products built for snacking slowly alongside beer, vermouth or wine while conversations drift into the evening. Mediterranean drinking culture understands better than most that salty food and alcohol are close friends.

The branding has become oddly recognisable too. Those green tins now sit somewhere between pantry staple and accidental design object. Fortunately the contents still justify the attention, which is not always guaranteed once food products become fashionable enough to appear on tote bags.
