Pieropan Soave is a distinguished white wine from the Veneto region in northeastern Italy, renowned for its crispness and versatility. Crafted by the Pieropan family, who have been producing wines since the 1890s, this Soave is a blend of Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grapes. The vineyards are situated on volcanic and calcareous soils at elevations of 100-300 meters above sea level, contributing to the wine's mineral complexity.

The 2023 vintage of Pieropan Soave presents a delicate straw-yellow hue with subtle aromas of fresh apple and almond. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of fruitiness and acidity, culminating in a clean, crisp finish with a distinct hint of almond.

Soave spent years suffering from the sort of reputation problem that happens when a region becomes too commercially successful too quickly. Plenty of anonymous supermarket white wine, not much excitement. Pieropan were one of the producers responsible for reminding people that Soave, when handled seriously, can be one of Italy’s genuinely great white wine regions.

Founded in the late 19th century in the town of Soave itself, the family winery became hugely influential under Leonildo Pieropan, particularly through single-vineyard wines like Calvarino and La Rocca. Long before site-specific Italian whites became fashionable, Pieropan were already proving Garganega could express vineyard character with real precision and ageing potential.

The wines balance freshness and texture beautifully. Garganega naturally brings almond, citrus peel and white flower notes, while the volcanic soils around Soave add a slightly smoky mineral edge underneath. Calvarino leans sharper and more linear, while La Rocca becomes broader, richer and almost creamy with age.

What makes Pieropan particularly impressive is restraint. The wines carry concentration without heaviness and complexity without unnecessary winemaking theatre. Even the richer bottlings still feel bright and alive rather than weighed down by oak or alcohol.

Soave itself has quietly become one of the most interesting white wine regions in Italy again, largely because producers like Pieropan kept believing in it while the rest of the market chased trendier names elsewhere.
