This is a Traditional Method Sparkling Shiraz made from 100 % Shiraz fruit grown in the Pyrenees vineyards of Pyren Vineyard, planted by brothers Brian & Kevyn Joy in 1999 and now tended by Leighton Joy and viticulturist Graeme Miles. The “Earthscape” label celebrates the quartz-rich, elevated terrain that shapes the site’s character and energy.

Hand-harvested from the most elevated block, the grapes are fermented in open vessels with a high proportion of whole berry fruit before the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle. About 30 % of the wine sees new French and Hungarian oak for several months, followed by extended time on lees in bottle prior to disgorgement, giving both structure and complexity to the finished sparkling red.

In the glass it offers vibrant cherry and raspberry fruit, lifted by savoury touches of clove, black pepper and cedar, with powdered cocoa and burnt orange adding depth and richness and soft, fine tannins giving texture.

Pyren Vineyard

Style: Winery

Country: Australia

Region: Pyrenees, Victoria

The Pyrenees in Victoria have quietly become one of Australia’s most underrated wine regions. Cooler than many people expect and full of varied soils, the area produces wines with structure and freshness alongside the generosity Australian fruit naturally brings. Pyren Vineyard captures that balance beautifully.

Family-owned and based in the Pyrenees region of western Victoria, the winery focuses on varieties that thrive in the local climate, particularly Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The reds tend to show dark berry fruit, spice and fine tannins rather than the heavier, more alcoholic style once associated with Australian wine internationally.

Shiraz performs especially well here. There is ripe blackberry and plum character, but also pepper, herbal notes and a brighter acidity that keeps everything moving. Cabernet carries similar freshness, often showing cassis, mint and firm structure without excessive oak.

The whites lean clean and expressive, with Chardonnay balancing stone fruit and citrus against restrained oak influence. Nothing feels overworked. The wines generally allow the fruit and vineyard character to stay front and centre.

Victoria’s cooler-climate regions have become increasingly important in reshaping perceptions of Australian wine, and Pyren Vineyard sits comfortably within that shift.
