Style: Brewery

Quilmes occupies roughly the same cultural position in Argentina that certain national lagers do elsewhere. Everybody knows it, everybody has an opinion on it and it tends to appear wherever food, football or large family gatherings are involved.

Founded in the late nineteenth century by German immigrant Otto Bemberg, the brewery became one of Argentina’s defining beer brands. The flagship lager is clean, light-bodied and highly drinkable, designed far more around refreshment than complexity.

Served properly cold, it works exactly as intended. Gentle grain sweetness, mild bitterness and enough carbonation to handle hot weather, grilled meat and long afternoons without demanding too much attention. Not every beer needs to be a heavily dry-hopped philosophical statement.

Its connection to Argentine culture is arguably more important than the tasting notes. Quilmes is deeply woven into everyday life, from football sponsorship to family barbecues and late-night gatherings. The beer often functions as a social backdrop rather than the centre of attention.

That sort of role is easy to underestimate. Plenty of breweries produce technically more complex beer. Far fewer become part of a country's shared identity.
