This Champagne is a 100% Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs crafted by the family domaine Rousseaux-Batteux, located in Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims. Adrien Rousseaux currently leads the estate, representing the fourth generation of winemakers in the family, with roots stretching back to the early 20th century.

The grapes come from Grand Cru vineyards across Verzenay, Verzy, and Louvois. The cuvée typically blends two consecutive vintages—most often 2020 and 2021—in approximately equal parts. These wines are vinified in oak barrels and aged on the lees for around 24 months before disgorgement, resulting in subtle richness and complexity. The dosage lands in the Extra Brut range (around 5–6 g/L).

Tasting notes paint a vivid picture: the color leans toward straw-yellow with a hint of gold. On the nose, expect aromas of ripe white fruit, wildflowers, pastry and a delicate candied pear or lemon peel. The palate is creamy yet fresh, with a refined tension, savory length, and a chalky minerality

Rousseaux-Batteux

Style: WInery

Country: France

Region: Champagne, Vallée de la Marne

Champagne’s smaller grower producers often offer some of the most interesting bottles in the region, partly because they focus so heavily on vineyards rather than global branding. Rousseaux-Batteux sits comfortably within that tradition.

Based in the Vallée de la Marne, the family estate works primarily with the classic Champagne varieties, particularly Pinot Meunier, which thrives in the area’s clay-rich soils. The grape brings softness, fruit and generosity that help define the style of the wines.

The Champagnes tend to show orchard fruit, citrus, brioche and gentle floral notes supported by fine mousse and bright acidity. There is freshness throughout, but also enough richness to make the wines feel satisfying at the table.

What makes smaller growers appealing is that the wines often feel more directly tied to place. Vineyard character remains visible rather than being blended into a broad house style designed for worldwide consistency.

Rousseaux-Batteux captures that balance nicely. Traditional Champagne, carefully made, with plenty of personality left intact.
