More About Schlenkerla Lagerbier

Smoked Lager

Meet the Producer, Schlenkerla Brewery

Schlenkerla Brewery

Style: Brewery

Most breweries spend years trying to create a distinctive house character. Schlenkerla smells like a bonfire before you even open the bottle.

Based in Bamberg, the historic brewery has been associated with smoked beer for centuries and remains one of the defining names in Rauchbier. The brewery tavern itself dates back to the early fifteenth century, while the brewing tradition that became Schlenkerla has been preserved through generations of family ownership.

The signature Märzen is brewed using malt dried over beechwood smoke, giving the beer its unmistakable character. Smoke dominates initially, often bringing comparisons to cured ham, campfires or smoked bacon, but underneath sits a remarkably balanced Franconian lager with malt sweetness, bitterness and surprising drinkability.

What catches many people off guard is how quickly the palate adjusts. The first sip can feel slightly shocking. By the third glass you start wondering why more beer does not taste like this.

Bamberg remains the spiritual home of Rauchbier, and Schlenkerla continues to prove that brewing traditions survive best when nobody feels the need to apologise for them.
