Schneider's Bayrisch Helles is a reminder that great lager doesn't need to shout.

While the Schneider name is best known for wheat beer, this Bavarian Helles takes a different path, focusing on balance, subtlety, and the sort of drinkability that has made the style a staple of Munich beer halls for generations.

Everything here is beautifully judged. Soft bready malt sits at the centre of the beer, bringing gentle sweetness and a rounded texture, while traditional German hops add delicate floral notes, a touch of fresh-cut grass, and just enough bitterness to keep things crisp. Nothing dominates, yet every element plays its part.

What makes a good Helles so satisfying is how difficult it is to hide behind anything. There's nowhere for flaws to go. The malt, hops, yeast, and water all have to work together, and when they do, the result can be far more rewarding than beers with twice the ingredients and ten times the marketing budget.

This is exactly that sort of lager. Clean, refreshing, and endlessly drinkable, with a softness and elegance that keeps you coming back for another sip.

Perfect with pretzels, roast pork, sunshine, or absolutely no food at all. Sometimes the best beers are simply the ones you want another pint of, and Bayrisch Helles fits that description perfectly.

Schneider Weisse Brewery

Style: Brewery

Country: Germany

Region: Bavaria

Wheat beer and Bavaria have been linked for centuries, but Schneider Weisse helped ensure the style survived when many people had already moved on to other things.

Founded in 1872 by Georg Schneider, the brewery remains one of Germany’s great wheat beer specialists and the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria. While many breweries produce a wheat beer alongside dozens of other styles, Schneider built its entire identity around Weissbier.

The classic Tap 7 Original remains the benchmark. Deep amber in colour, naturally cloudy and packed with banana, clove, spice and bready malt character, it captures everything people love about traditional Bavarian wheat beer.

The wider range explores lighter, darker and considerably stronger territory. Aventinus in particular has achieved near-legendary status among wheat beer drinkers, proving the style can carry serious depth and complexity alongside its trademark freshness.

What makes Schneider Weisse so impressive is that the beers still feel rooted in tradition without becoming trapped by it. Four generations of brewers have managed that balancing act remarkably well.
